Argentina all but booked their place in the second round of the World Cup with a blistering 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro. The biggest win of the World Cup so far demonstrated to all other competing teams that the South American two time World Cup winners will be a force come the knock out stages.
Two goals from Maxi, and strikes from Tevez, Messi, Crespo were all gleefully greeted by the watching crowd, but it was the Argentinean’s second goal, a twenty four pass move which will long be remembered.
After a slick victory over the troublesome Ivory Coast in the first game Argentina again started Saviola upfront and Riquelme in midfield. Serbia knowing they needed a win again played with ex Premiership players Kezman and Milosevic up front.
It didn’t take long however for their formation and shape to fall to pieces as Argentina rolled in an early goal, typical of their impressive style so far shown. Set up by Saviola, Rodriguez as able to stab home a first time shot past the keeper after being poorly marked.
The second and wonder goal was a master class in the arts of patience, passing and moving. Cambiasso involved twice in the move would eventually get on the end of a piece of Argentinean brilliance. Riquelme involved several times worked the ball around before a changing of the pace allowed a one two between Saviola and Crespo to be completed before Cambiasso also received a one two pass from the Chelsea man. The finish was of true class and from that moment on Serbia looked a beaten side.
The third goal was pure embarrassment for the defense as in attempting to shepherd the ball out of play Krstaljic was robbed by Saviola who cut inside a bewildered defender, placed a shot across the keeper which was then parried for Maxi who fired in his second via the post.
The World Cup first timers looked like novices as they failed to create very little and the air of resignation which had compounded their defeat against Holland in the first game seemingly returned to they play as Milosevic fired badly wide when created with a half chance.
The introductions of Messi and Tevez were the last sights which the Serbian’s needed to see and almost with his first touch the teen Barcelona superstar was able to contribute heavily. Latching onto a quick free kick taken by Riquelme, Messi cross for Crespo to tap in at the far post.
Number five wasn’t far away as Tevez beat two defenders before rolling the ball in for a superb individual goal. The rout was completed as Tevez got an assists playing a pass for Messi to run onto before embarrassing the keeper with a cool finish at the near post.
For the Serbian’s it was an embarrassment to the defense which conceded one goal in qualification but for Argentina it was a sign that perhaps there is more to come in the same vein.
