My Name is Earl – Season 1
Jason Lee tries to improve his life – karma-style
What’s it all about then?
A petty thief, Earl (Jason Lee) who spends more time in a jail cell than in his own home has his life turned round by a series of events. First he wins big on a lottery scratch card (money which you discover later he in fact stole!) but during the moment he begins celebrating his win, he is hit by a car and ends up in hospital. Whilst in a coma, his wife leaves him and with things going from bad to worse he listens to some advice on improve your life from MTV presenter Carson Daly who presents Earl with the theory of karma, and the promise that if he does good things, then good things will happen.
Slowly recovering from his grief stricken state of realising that during the car accident he lost the winning lottery ticket, Earl makes a list of all the bad things he has ever done and with the help of his brother Randy (Ethan Suplee – Clerks 2 and the Butterfly Effect) he decides to go about putting them right one by one.
Changing things isn’t so easy however as with his ex-wife Joy (Jamie Pressley) constantly looking for a share of his money, many of the things he has to put right require her involvement, something she is more than willing to offer – in exchange for a hot tub. By hook or by crook with the help of friend Catalina (Nadine Vasquez), Darnell – affectionately known as crab man (Eddie Steeples) and his former cellmate Ralph (Giovani Ribisi) Earl sets about making his life better and helping those who he sinned against in previous years.
In each episode, Earl tries to put right moments from his past using a list of all his wrongdoings. Whilst the main protagonist always sets out with the best of intentions, others around him complicate the situation, and the recipients of Earl’s good deeds are not always looking to forgive quite so readily.
As he sets out to become a new man, there are plenty of unexpected experiences for Earl to encounter throughout the series.
