ACROSS England the top twenty teams in the country are preparing their final preparations for the Premiership season. Teams at the top and the bottom of league have been looking to add, sustain and improve on their form last season with as usual plenty of transfer activity in and out of each club. Here’s how the season is shaping up:
Arsenal
How the team performed last season… Having sold Thierry Henry to Barcelona in the summer before the season started, Arsenal overachieved without their star man leading the league for most of the season before being overhauled by stronger Manchester United and Chelsea sides. With a young team at his disposal, Wenger’s men played their usual brand of spectacular football and proved they had grown up immensely after struggling in previous campaigns.
Transfer Activity over the summer… As usual Arsene Wenger has been fairly thrifty the club were hit by the losses of Flamini and Hleb but have held on to Adebayor. Much of the clubs spending has been on Samir Nasri while Welsh teenager Aaron Ramsey was also brought in as well as midfielder Amauri Bischoff.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Despite their lack of experience which showed last season Arsenal have the exuberance of youth and although several changes may have been made to their squad they way those who step in will perform will be no different. The team still has the quality of Walcott, Adebayor and Toure and with Rosicky and Eduardo to return there is still a strong spine.
Ways they might struggle… Arsenal were something of an unknown quantity last year and this year teams will be well aware of the quality they posses. The Gunners picked up so many points from losing positions last season and it is hard to seem them repeating the feat they achieved with such an inexperienced line-up.
It’s a big season for… Theo Walcott – The young England forward because something of a sensation last season from a wide position and Wenger has made it clear that he will get more playing time this season and the faith which his manager shows in him will need to be rewarded with continuing improvement.
Who might unexpectedly star? Samir Nasri – Foreign players coming into the league generally take one season to adjust but the fact that Wenger has spent a reasonable amount of money on the French forward likened to Zidane shows a mark of his potential.
Pre season prediction… Once more Arsenal will be challenging at the top of the league but only time will tell how close they can get to Chelsea and Manchester United.
Aston Villa
How the team performed last season… Last season Martin O’Neil’s persistence with largely the same group of players paid off unlike in recent years. The attacking tactics employed by the Irishman paid dividends as Villa spent their whole campaign in the top half of the league and made it into the Intertoto Cup for this season.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Much of Villa’s summer has been about the will he/wont he saga of Gareth Barry and their spending has been reasonably limited despite their small squad. Olaf Mellberg departed to Juventus and the club also lost Bouma to a long-term injury but Martin O’Neil has strengthened by bringing in American goalkeepers Brad Guizan and Brad Friedel. Villa also brought in Steve Sidwell from Chelsea and made Curtis Davis’ transfer from West Brom permanent.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Villa have a very close knit team unit and a young side who will only improve over time. The 4-3-3 system the club play is perfectly adapted to their players and with an excellent manager in charge who knows how to get results which bodes well as long as he in charge.
Ways they might struggle… Presuming Barry moves Villa look a midfielder light and without much time to replace him they may struggle to impose themselves as they did last year. They were something of an unknown last year to many opponents and may have a consolatory year as they look to stay in an about the UEFA cup places.
It’s a big season for… Ashley Young – The Villa midfielder impressed enough to make it into the England squad last season and he must continue to improve if he wants to become an International regular. Young had an excellent season both scoring and making goals and he will be looking to improve on last season tally.
Who might unexpectedly star? Steve Sidwell – Having played less than ten games for Chelsea last season the former Reading midfielder may be looking to prove to many why he deserved a move to West London in the first place. With Gareth Barry set to depart he will be an important player for the club this season.
Pre season prediction… Villa will most likely fail to achieve in their goal to break into the top four but will be looking to make the UEFA Cup yet again.
Blackburn
How the team performed last season… Blackburn performed above themselves in yet another campaign under Mark Hughes and were themselves pushing for a place in the Champions League for a long period of time. Their inexperience caused them to fade somewhat towards the end of the campaign but the can be well pleased with their efforts having been mentioned as one of the teams who may struggle to keep pace with those improve at the top of the season.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Following the departure of Mark Hughes the club brought in Paul Ince as their major new ‘transfer’ and the former MK Dons manager has brought in experience in Paul Robinson and attacking flair in the form of Carlos Villanueva.
Reasons why they’ll do well… With or without Mark Hughes, Blackburn have always been a very difficult team to beat with a record as good as any against the top four sides and they have the strength to beat off the ‘weaker’ teams. A fresh approach from Paul Ince may help to give them an impetus and push them on from being a top ten side to a top six side on a consistent basis.
Ways they might struggle… With Hughes now gone and they ‘star’ also departing it could be a consolatory season and Blackburn and their new manager get used to each other. Rovers have a good set of players but the question remains whether they are good enough to sustain their performances and keep up with the ‘big’ spenders around them such as Spurs, Villa and Man City.
It’s a big season for… Paul Robinson – The ‘former’ England goalkeeper has a chance to redeem himself at a new club and prove that he should not be cast aside quite so easily by critics in the media. Replacing Brad Friedel is a big job but Robinson undoubtedly has the talent, its whether he can regain his confidence that will matter.
Who might unexpectedly star? Carlos Villanueva – The Columbian winger was brought to the club partly to soften the blow of David Bentley joining Spurs but he could be a shrewd, cut price capture if as Paul Ince believes he has the ability to take players on and score goals in the same manner that the clubs former number 7 did.
Pre season prediction… With a new manager at the helm it will be difficult for Blackburn to sustain their recent excellent league positions but they hope they have replaced one tough tackling player with another who can take to management at the top level.
Bolton Wanderers
How the team performed last season… Wanderers had the season of two halves last campaign looking to be condemned to the trap door until Christmas and then escaping from trouble with just a few weeks to go. Under Gary Megson, Bolton looked to have reverted to the style of play which has so far brought them much success in the Premiership as they turned the Reebok Stadium into a formidable place and made it difficult for teams to break them down wherever possible.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Gary Megson freshened up his squad by releasing a couple of the older players and added Toulouse striker Johan Elmander for £11m and also captured Fabrice Muamba who was impressive in Birmingham City’s effort to avoid relegation last campaign.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Bolton improved significantly towards the end of the last campaign and the players will still have plenty to prove to their relatively new manager. Under Megson Bolton reverted to their familiar style of being difficult to beat and they will be looking to continue their progress.
Ways they might struggle… Although changes were made last season Bolton were not a million miles away from being relegated and it was as much to do with the teams below them being bad as it was about them performing well. They will have to improve significantly if they want to avoid a familiar season of woes this time around.
It’s a big season for… Kevin Nolan – Two seasons ago the midfielder had aspirations to play for England but after a couple of bad seasons in terms of goal scoring the captain will be looking to inspire his team to perform better this time around.
Who might unexpectedly star? Gary Cahill – The defender moved from Aston Villa last season having failed to break into the team but his performances last campaign proved why he is recognized as a player of great potential. If he can help to stabilize the Bolton backline and chip in with a few goals then who knows what might happen for the club this campaign.
Pre season prediction… Bolton should avoid relegation this season but it is more likely to be a bottom half struggle for the club.
Chelsea
How the team performed last season… Many would suggest that with all the financial power they posses three second places finishes is not good enough but having been rocked by the loss of their inspirational leader Jose Mourinho in mid-season it took a mammoth effort from Avram Grant and his team to get themselves so close in the Premiership and to reach the Carling and Champions League final. With a new man at the helm again Chelsea will be looking to improve on a season that was a fraction away from being perfect.
Transfer Activity over the summer… As well as changing their manager Chelsea have been relatively busy in the transfer market. With Lampard and Drogba rumoured to be interesting in leaving no exits have yet materialized and the club have strengthened by adding Deco and defender Jose Bosingwa.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Chelsea not only have quality players from one to eleven but they also have an abundance of talent in reserve which improves their prospects incredibly. The squad is full of options and to good players from every position, with a new manager at the helm there are bound to be a few new ideas in place.
Ways they might struggle… Chelsea were within a whisker of treble glory last season and it with changes have been made in the back room and on the pitch it may have created to instability. Scolari has World Cup pedigree but club management is very different and it might be very difficult for him to adapt to life in the Premiership.
It’s a big season for… Nicolas Anelka – Joining from Bolton last season the French striker looked at his unhappy worse for much of the second half of the season and will have to add goals this campaign if Chelsea are to end their chance for Champions League glory.
Who might unexpectedly star? Scott Sinclair – The forward has been a star at U19 level for a while and played well for Palace last season as they made the Championship playoffs. A good dribbler and extremely positive in his attacking player, Sinclair may have an important peripheral role to play at the club next season.
Pre season prediction… Chelsea will no doubt be around the top four again but it remains to be seen if they can overhaul Manchester United once more.
Everton
How the team performed last season… Everton spent much of the time challenging the top four for a place in the Champions League before eventually falling away late on in the season. David Moyes’ side were impressive throughout most of the early campaign and kept pace with rivals Liverpool for long periods of time. They were eventually forced to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup but having made the quarterfinals of the competition they will be looking to challenge at the top of the league as they have done in the past few seasons.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Surprisingly Everton have yet to add to their relatively small squad from last season but will welcome back Tim Cahill and Michael Arteta from long-term injuries.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Everton have now established themselves as a top ten team and despite not spending as much or seemingly having the quality of players of those around them, their team ethic has always worked in their advantage. They not only have a style of play which is difficult to break down and play against but they also have the players for the big occasion and in recent seasons they have had a knack of beating those around them which has been very important.
Ways they might struggle… The Toffee’s have been rather quiet in the transfer market not yet adding to anything to the squad from last year and it is difficult to see how they will move forward without adding to their team. Everton have pushed for fourth place in the last couple of years but come up short due to their squad size and it looks like it could be déjà vu in 2008/9.
It’s a big season for… James Vaughan…The Everton starlet has been in and out of the team since his record-breaking feat of being the youngest person to ever score in the Premiership. Unfortunately injuries have wrecked his chances at a prolonged spell of first team football but as David Moyes has not been able to add to his squad he will be welcomed back with open arms.
Who might unexpectedly star? Dan Gosling… Joining from Plymouth last season, Gosling has barely had a chance to make an impression but did take part in the under 19’s Championship for England. He has tenacity in midfield and could add a bit of bite to an Everton midfield which will be clawing back ground on the likes of those around them.
Pre season prediction… Everton will do well to keep up with their 5th place performances for the last couple of years and having a small squad could inhibit them this time around. Keeping pace with the likes of Spurs, Man City and Aston Villa in the European places will surely be their target.
Fulham
How the team performed last season… The Cottagers endured the most traumatic of seasons looking to be dead and buried for long periods of time before staging the most tremendous comeback, culminating in a last day escape against Portsmouth. Fulham spent much of the season struggling for form and it wasn’t until Jimmy Bullard returned to the side that the squad seemed to be galvanized into a response and started the greatest of escapes from relegation.
Transfer Activity over the summer… After avoiding relegation last season Fulham have understandably spent a substantial amount of money trying to ensure that they do not suffer the same problems once again. Roy Hodgson made a double swoop on West Ham to sign Bobby Zamora and John Paintsil and from other premiership opponent he has also brought in Zoltan Gera, Andranik and Mark Schwarzer.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Fulham proved towards the end of last season that when they put their mind to it they are a quality outfit with the fighting spirit to beat anyone and if they put that into practice at the start of the season, who knows what they fan achieve. They have some experienced Premiership campaigners and with a constant reminder of what they achieved when the pressure was on last year Fulham can do no wrong if they try to recreate that fight.
Ways they might struggle… The clubs ‘great escape’ last term was a fantastic achievement but it was achieved with their backs against the wall and it would be difficult for them to play with a sense of no fear over a full season. Fulham’s battling form which saw them beat the drop was much to do with their nothing to lose attitude and having lost Brian McBride and replaced him with Andy Johnson it is certain they will have to play in a different and possible less successful way.
It’s a big season for… Jimmy Bullard…The charismatic midfielder was the club inspiration last campaign and if they intend to avoid relegation he will have to be at his creative best throughout. Backed by an improved squad, Bullard will still be the player who carries Fulham through their difficult times.
Who might unexpectedly star? Zoltan Gera…The Hungarian midfielder joined from promoted West Brom looking for a new challenge and as a goal scorer and creator of goals he could be important chipping in to help get Fulham away from the bottom of the table.
Pre season prediction… The West London side should stay well away from the nether reaches of the table this time around but how far they go will depend on whether their most influential players can stay fit.
Hull City
How the team performed last season… Hull City achieved the unlikely last season by achieving an incredible promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time. The Tigers were around the top six all campaign and could have gained automatic promotion had things gone their way. As it was their achieved promotion through the lottery of the playoffs and having hammered Watford in the semi finals a goal from Dean Windass guaranteed them top flight football in the final against Bristol City.
Transfer Activity over the summer… In a bid to stay in the Premiership at the first attempt Phil Brown has chosen to go for proven Premiership experience. Geovanni signed on a free transfer from Manchester City while George Boateng joined from Boro to bolster the clubs midfield. Also added to the squad have been Craig Fagan, Bernard Mendy, Tony Warner and Anthony Gardner.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Nobody gave Hull a prayer of being in the position they are at the moment and Phil Brown’s team are sure to looking to ride the crest of the wave into the Premiership looking to get themselves off to a good start. Having worked under Sam Allardyce at Bolton, the Hull manager knows the exact blueprint for staying in the Premiership and will be doing his best to put it into practice.
Ways they might struggle… As they are such underdogs it is difficult to see how Hull have the strength in depth to stay up in the Premiership. They may have some experienced heads but Brown has promised that his side will not come up and try to defend their way to 40 points. If the manager is determined for his side to play an expansive game then he may be forced to re-think his tactics is Hull take a beating in an early game.
It’s a big season for… Nick Barmby – The former Middlesbrough midfielder may not be able to last a full 90 mins. anymore but his experience will be vital if Hull are to stay in the Premiership. His knowledge and knowhow of the top division will be extremely beneficial to the younger players in this team.
Who might unexpectedly star? Dean Marney – The former Spurs midfielder has played a bit part role for Hull City but his knowledge of what it takes to play in the Premier League will be vital. He has the craft to make a goal out of nothing and can also score one himself which will be important as stepping up a level where goal scoring will be extremely important.
Pre season prediction… Hull will most likely struggle to make the grade in the Premiership but they will have a good go at it and they may be a success if they play with nothing to fear.
Liverpool
How the team performed last season… The Anfield side improved significantly from their previous season but still finished in a lower position because of the teams around them improving. They were hassled for much of the campaign by Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa but in the end their strength in depth counted for much as they eased out the sides below them. The addition of Fernando Torres proved impressive by RafaBenitz and he will be looking to attempt to end Liverpool’s 20-year wait for a title.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Much of the transfer discussion this summer has been about Liverpool signing Gareth Barry but the deal has yet to go through. Benitez has chosen to sign Philipp Degan and Andrea Dosessa from Europe as well as bringing in Robbie Keane from Spurs and Diego Cavalieri from Brazil.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Liverpool have improved over the last couple of seasons and although they have been far away from title challenge in the last few years the addition of Fernando Torres added the firepower they had been looking for. With the addition of a couple of defenders, Steven Gerrard returning to the central midfield position he thrives from and Robbie Keane’s guile and finishing instincts added up front Liverpool may be ready for the first time since the mid-1990’s to launch a worthy title challenge.
Ways they might struggle… Due to their additions, there is an extra weight of expectation on Liverpool’s shoulders which they have not handled well in the past. Although they were closer to the top two than they have been since Benitez took over there is still some ground to make up and matters off the field could be harming the club’s chance of keeping their manager as a breakdown in the relationship between Hicks, Gillet, Parry and Benitez is exactly what their rivals will be hoping for.
It’s a big season for… Ryan Babbel – The Dutch winger showed last season from the bench that he adds a little something extra to Liverpool’s play coming up with crucial goals in the Champions League against Arsenal. Benitez has faith in the young forward to help Liverpool’s title challenge this season and he is expected to start regularly alongside Keane and Torres who have already proved their ability to be consistent, Babel wil need to to the same if he wants to be part of a successful team.
Who might unexpectedly star? David Ngog – The 17 year-old French striker has started much of Liverpool’s pre-season and proved with two goals in as many games that he could be a great addition to the Liverpool forward line. With the addition of Keane to the already established Torres it is unlikely that Ngog will get a regular starting place but coming off the bench he will trouble defences with his pace and could be used regularly by Benitez to great effect.
Pre season prediction… Liverpool will be looking to make a title challenge this season and if they are unable to achieve a top two finish then questions may be asked of Benitez.
Manchester City
How the team performed last season… For the first time in a long few years Manchester City spent the campaign in the top half of the league but even that wasn’t enough to save Sven from the chop as City changed manager. The Swede worked miracles from the start of the campaign helping City to top of the league in the first few weeks and in the hunt for a UEFA Cup spot until their drubbing on the final day of the season they got their reward for a long season with a European place from the Fair Play League.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Arriving from Blackburn, Mark Hughes has been working with relatively the same squad as his predecessor left behind but looking to build on a UEFA Cup spot the Welshman has signed Brazilian striker Jo and Tal Ben Haim from Chelsea.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Sven Goran Eriksson worked magic at Manchester City last season and seemed to change the culture of the club from perennial underachievers into a genuine threat. City have a solid spine from back to front and have a manager who will build on the performances they produced last season.
Ways they might struggle… After what Sven did with Manchester City particularly in the early part of the season, many supporters will expect the club to be up their challenging in the European places but having appointed a new manager the players have to adopt a new style of play and basically start all over again. The progress they made last year could be hampered because of all the changes and with off-field uncertainty surrounding the funds of their chairman, Mark Hughes have some decisions taken out of his hands if the Premier League decide to get involved.
It’s a big season for…Elano – The Brazilian proved in the first half of last season that he is undoubtedly a quality player but his commitment was called into question in January and beyond when things started to get tough. With a front pairing of Jo and Benjani likely they will need someone to supply them with plenty of passes and with his Brazilian magic behind the front two Elano is just the man to do that, the question is whether he can be as good or consistent for 9 months of a season this time around.
Who might unexpectedly star? Daniel Sturridge – Rumours circulated in the media that Chelsea were taking a look a Sturridge should Drgoba leave the club and as the 18-year-old was part of the team which successful beat the blues in the youth cup final, it is no wonder they are interested. Tall and powerful, Sturridge also has raw pace and showed with a goal for City last season that he can finish. He plays without fear in a team desperate for success and could be thrown in by Mark Hughes alongside Jo, Elanio, Benjani and Petrov to make a formidable attacking line up.
Pre season prediction… Providing Mark Hughes can keep Manchester City going forward they will be in and around the UEFA Cup spots again
Manchester United
How the team performed last season… Manchester United did what many people expected them do to last campaign and dominated the Premiership and Europe for the first time since 1999. The Reds battled it out with Chelsea for most of the campaign and even when Arsenal led the league for most of the season, United were the fancied team because of their previous championship experiences.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Strangely Manchester United have been fairly quiet in the transfer market and with most of the talk being about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo the club have got on with their pre-season preparations quietly. Having dominated in Europe and domestically they have chosen to keep the team fairly settled and on added young full backs Fabio and Rafael da Silva as well as allowing Gerard Pique to join Barcelona.
Reasons why they’ll do well… As Champions Manchester United have shown in the past how difficult it is to overhaul them. With a relatively similar squad to the last campaign the club will be extremely difficult to beat and all throughout the squad they have two good players for every position and with title experience there is no doubt that they will be the team for everyone else to catch.
Ways they might struggle… As they have the last few years, United have failed to replace the four pronged attacked the had in the treble season of 1999 and an injury to Wayne Rooney of Tevez could leave them desperately short of attacking options. The likes of Giggs and Scholes cannot keep going forever and should Anderson or Nani suffer long-term injuries it could go wrong.
It’s a big season for… Wes Brown – The defender has long been a peripheral figure in the Manchester United team but with an injury to Gary Neville he got his chance to prove himself as a first team player and took his opportunity well enough to even make it into Fabio Capello’s England squad. The United club captain is likely to return to action soon but the man in possession of the shirt will have to prove that he is worthy of a regular place.
Who might unexpectedly star? Frazer Campbell – Ferguson has declared his desire for the player to stay at the club and be part of the first team squad and after an impressive season the young striker could be the key should any of the other forwards get injured.
Pre season prediction… Its hard to look past Manchester United winning their Premiership yet again and if they perform anything like they did in the latter part of last season they are sure to succeed.
Middlesbrough
How the team performed last season… Boro had a frustrating year last season with their supporters becoming increasingly animated about their ability to put the top sides under pressure but failing to deal with opponents towards the bottom of the league. The Teesiders were never seriously threatened by relegation but flirted with trouble for a little while before moving away from trouble eventually.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Gareth Southgate spent most of his chairman’s money tying up a deal for Alfonso Alves up and has added to his squad by signing Marvin Emnes and Didier Digard. Boro cleared out several of their older heads by releasing Mark Schwarzer, Fabio Rochemback, Gaizka Mendieta and George Boateng who was sold to Hull for £1.5m.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Boro have improved every season under Gareth Southgate and with a year more of experience under their belt the club will be hoping that they can make sure that they replicate performance against the big clubs against the teams they will be expected to beat.
Ways they might struggle… Some how or other Boro always manage to keep their heads above water but is their luck about to run out? The Teesiders always seem to have a defeat to ‘smaller’ sides in them and they always seem to go on a winless streak at some point which the cannot afford.
It’s a big season for… Mido – The Egyptian striker recently received a recall to his national squad and it appears that he may be changing his ways. The striker has yet to really prove himself in the Premiership beyond his short loan spell at Spurs and a series of injuries prevented him from doing so again last year. Boro will need someone to provide goals as an alternative to Alves and Southgate will be hoping that Mido is exactly that player.
Who might unexpectedly star? Adam Johnson – The left-winger said in the summer that he is tired of being in the shadow of Stuart Downing and some of his performances last season suggest that he is capable of filling his boots. Tricky and skilful with a good eye for goal the midfielder may get his chance to prove he is worth a place in the first team.
Pre season prediction… Boro are likely to suffer the same inconsistency they have over the last couple of seasons as they inexperienced team continues to grow up. Their most likely target is a top ten finish as they look to build on the stability of the last few years.
Newcastle United
How the team performed last season… Under Sam Allardyce at the start of the campaign, Newcastle showed their frustrating side, struggling to climb out of the bottom half. Relegation was never a serious threat but two wins in a row under Kevin Keegan hauled them out of trouble and towards the end of the year the Magpies began to show their qualities and almost pushed for a top half finish.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Despite the millions invested in the club by Chris Mort and Mike Ashley Newcastle have been relatively quiet in the transfer market signing only Jonas Gutierrez from Real Mallorca and Danny Guthrie from Liverpool.
Reasons why they’ll do well… In there hour(s) of need last year Newcastle we undoubtedly inspired by the passion of their manager who knows how to win football matches at the top level. A fit again Michael Owen was a bonus and as he has done all the way through his career he produced when it mattered. Newcastle may be done just enough to avoid relegation in April but they will start this season with a more settled line up and many of their top players will be well rested.
Ways they might struggle… Boardroom struggles continue to threaten the work Newcastle put in last season and off the pitch uncertainties are exactly what Newcastle could do with avoiding if they are to succeed. The fragility of Keegan’s state of mind should rumours persist surrounding the unrest will be an unhelpful distraction for a club who has often flattered to deceive.
It’s a big season for… Joey Barton – The midfielder has some making up to do to both the supporters and the club who have backed him throughout yet another troublesome spell. Barton will be under no illusions that the Geordies are giving him one last chance to let his football do the talking and there is no doubt that he has the talent to do so it’s whether or not his attitude will allow him to.
Who might unexpectedly star? Jonas Guttierez – The midfielder nicknamed ‘Spiderman’ has been brought into the squad to add some attacking flair and to supply Owen, Viduka and Martins with some goals. If Newcastle are to play in the traditional Keegan way suggests then he will certainly be a major part of their campaign.
Pre season prediction…Toon chief Mike Ashley has called for the team to finish in the top for but realistic top ten would be some achievement.
Portsmouth
How the team performed last season… Much of Portsmouth success last season came in the FA Cup but in the league Portsmouth impressed in domestic play as well. The South Coast club started the season reasonably slowly but made the most of their cup heroics by sealing a place just outside the European places through their league performances. Harry Redknapp’s team looked stronger and stronger and once they added Jermaine Defoe during the January transfer window they looked like a formidable threat at home or away.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Traditionally a ‘wheeler-dealer’ in the transfer market Harry Redknapp has been reasonably quiet in the summer as Portsmouth looking to move up a level in the Premiership. His major signing has been Peter Crouch from Portsmouth as well as capturing Ben Sahar on loan from Chelsea and bringing in Glen Little from Reading in a free transfer.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Portsmouth’s form in both League and Cup last season was fantastic and they did the hard work arguably without a top striker. Having added the goal scoring power of Defoe and Crouch the South Coast squad is bolster and full of confidence to push on for a place in the top six.
Ways they might struggle… Portsmouth might not have a big enough squad for the fight yet again and with Europe as an extra burden in their season thanks to their FA Cup in it might be difficult to Harry Redknapp to find the correct balance in the Premiership and if they intend to defend their first trophy in the post war era then they are going to have find a way to keep their players fit and rotated enough to challenge on all fronts.
It’s a big season for… Peter Crouch – The striker was Pompey’s main summer signing and will be relied upon for a large share of their goals alongside Jermaine Defoe. The last time Crouch was a club regular he helped keep his current clubs rivals in the Premiership and although he will be fighting at a different end of the table he will have a chance to prove that when given a regular starting place he is worth a try at international level.
Who might unexpectedly star…? Ben Sahar – The Israeli striker on loan from Chelsea has a big future ahead of him if he can continue to scoe goals at International level on a regular basis and having proved his quality in the Championship he could be just the type of player Pompey need a goal to go that step further.
Pre season prediction… Portsmouth will be look at the top for as their target but qualifying for Europe through the league in the top six would be an excellent achievement.
Stoke City
How the team performed last season… Stoke had a memorable campaign in the Championship last term by sealing promotion of the final day of the campaign with a point against Leicester. The Potterers were in and around the top of the table all season and thanks to consistent management and building on their strengths as a tall powerful team they held off late challenges from Hull and Bristol to claim their place in the top flight.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Tony Pullis has decided to stick with many of the same players who achieved the amazing feat of promotion last season and has added to his squad with the Premiership experience of Dave Kitson and Thomas Sorensen as well as Seyi Olofinjana a versatile defensive player from Wolves.
Reasons why they’ll do well… To many teams Stoke are an unknown quantity and in the last few years teams coming up like Wigan and Reading have built successfully on promotion despite being much fancied for relegation. Stoke proved in the Championship that they are difficult to beat and their big physical approach to the game will have many teams not looking forward to playing against them.
Ways they might struggle… Comparisons have been made between Stoke and last seasons strugglers Derby and it is hard to see them staying in the league for more than one season. The club look generally weak in terms of strength in depth and with their direct style of play can only get them so far before better teams break them down easily.
It’s a big season for… Dave Kitson – The tall centre forward has so far been Stoke’s main acquisition and it could be his goals that keep them afloat. His experience with Reading in the Premiership of the past two seasons will be invaluable as he can guide some of the more inexperienced players through their first Premiership season.
Who might unexpectedly star? Glenn Whelan – The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has been linked with moves to the Premiership before and he now gets his chance with Stoke who will need him to be at his positive best throughout the season.
Pre season prediction… Stoke were outsiders to get out of the Championship but they are almost dead certs. to return. Comparisons to Derby may be extremely harsh but if they do not start well then it may be a similar stories to the Rams.
Sunderland
How the team performed last season… Taking the Championship by storm in their promotion season, Roy Keane’s realistic aim was keeping his side in the top flight which he managed to do with few worries. Sunderland never made it out of the bottom half but were never seriously dragged into the relegation battle allowing themselves some freedom to show what they can go. They turned the Stadium of Light into a fortress and have plenty of teams who visited their home problems.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Having spend nearly £50m on staying in the Premiership last season, Roy Keane has curbed his spending somewhat but still brought in plenty of experience to his squad. Tainio, Chimbonda and Malbranque have all joined the club from Spurs while Diouf has joined from Bolton.
Reasons why they’ll do well… At times last season Sunderland played with the spirit of the manager within them and aside from a beating they got from Everton they were always competitive and never looked like being relegated. Sunderland have a home record which is comparable with the top four and with at least ten wins guaranteed a season they have a solid platform.
Ways they might struggle… As good as their home record is, their away record is not the best and they sometimes show the immaturity of a Championship side. Keane’s team largely relied on the goals of Kenwyne Jones but with the striker missing for around three months someone will have to step up and contribute.
It’s a big season for… Craig Gordon – Britain’s most expensive goalkeeper started the game well but was dropped after a 7-1 defeat against Everton. He returned to the season when his deputy was inured and he will have to show some of the consistency he did at Hearts and as he does for Scotland if he is to help Sunderland stay away from the drop zone.
Who might unexpectedly star? Kieran Richardson – The left-winger joined Sunderland from Manchester United with a big reputation to live up to and in the games he played he went some way to showing his ability. Unfortunately these were few and far between as injury problems wrecked any kind of consistency he was looking to sustain. If he is to recreate the form which saw him score on his England debut then it is important that he stays healthy and helps his club side.
Pre season prediction… Sunderland will be safe again this time around and it will be important for them to build on what they achieved last season with a top ten finish.
Tottenham Hotspur
How the team performed last season… Spurs recovered well after starting the campaign dreadfully. The North London club were fancied to overtake their neighbours Arsenal but struggled to piece any form together in the early months which led them with a mountain to climb. Juande Ramos came in and began turning the club around in the second half of the season and also helped them win the Carling Cup against Chelsea.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Spurs have been one of the busier sides over the summer with Juande Ramos looking to build on an up and down campaign in his first half season at Spurs. The Spanish manager brought in Luca Modric even before his impressive performance at Euro 2008 and has also added goalkeeper Gomes, Barcelona attacker Giovanni Dos Santos and David Bentley.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Spurs were expected to do well last season but got off to a disastrous start as they looked to overhaul their rivals Arsenal. This year Spurs are in no doubt as to what it will take to achieve a top four finish this season and with the new ideas of Juande Ramos and some excellent additions to their squad they look like they will definitely improve on last year.
Ways they might struggle… Big things were expected of Spurs last term when they added to their squad and get again expectations will again be high. Ramos’ side have made plenty of personnel changes and there isn’t much time for them all to gel together no matter their talent. The North Londoners are no doubt improved but so are other teams in the league who finished above them.
It’s a big season for… Aaron Lennon – The Spurs winger had a quiet season last year and was frequently troubled with injury but this season the diminutive forward will have a major role to play for Spurs. With only two first choice strikers available Lennon will need to chip in with a few goals and will also need to be at his best if he is to keep his place ahead of David Bentley.
Who might unexpectedly star? John Bostock – The furore over his transfer may not quite yet have settled down but the 16-year old midfielder is undoubtedly a talent who Palace did not want to lose. How much the midfielder plays is questionable but at a young age he is a part of a squad which intend on moving forward and he will certainly learn plenty in his years at Spurs.
Pre season prediction… Many people predicted Spurs would challenge last season but a poor start let them down. If they start well then Spurs could be in with a shout of the top four, more realistic is a top 8 position with all the changes they have made.
West Bromwich Albion
How the team performed last season… West Brom bounced their way back into the Premiership in style last season by claiming the Championship league title with a couple of weeks left in he season. The Baggies were renowned as one of the best football playing sides in the league and played a great brand of attacking football to get themselves back into the top flight at the second attempt
Transfer Activity over the summer… West Brom have made significant improvements to their squad of players who won the Championship last season with major departures meaning that changes needed to be made. The club made Roman Bednar’s deal from Hearts permanent as well as signing Scott Carson, MarekCech and Scott Carson.
Reasons why they’ll do well… West Brom were widely recognised as playing the best football in the Championship last season. While others toiled at the top of the league when the Baggies had their full team available they clinched promotion with the greatest of ease. Going forward they were explosive and almost water tight at the back which could help them in the Premiership. Their experience of the Premier League will give them an advantage over other newcomers to the league as they have learnt the harsh way what the Premiership is all about.
Ways they might struggle… Though they conquered all with their explosive football last season the Premiership is a step up and they may have to reconfigure their tactics if they are to be a success. They still have some experience of previous Premiership incarnations in their squad but a big loss will be the ability of Kevin Phillips and Zoltan Gera who provided goals at crucial times. The Baggies will have to make a good start if they are to prevent the struggles of their last time in the league.
It’s a big season for… Ismail Miller – The big striker scored some vital goals in the Championship and will have a point to prove coming back into the league after being sold by Manchester City. He is big, strong and powerful and will cause defenders no end of problems if he plays to his potential.
Who might unexpectedly star? Chris Brunt – The former Sheffield Wednesday winger has represented Ireland at international level and finally gets his chance to prove his ability at the top level. A pacey and tricky creator of goals, Brunt will be a vital asset if West Brom are to succeed.
Pre season prediction… West Brom should do enough to survive as they have enough quality and they need luck to go their way as it did during their season of the ‘great escape’.
West Ham
How the team performed last season… West Ham saved their supporters from another topsy-turvy campaign by spending all of the season in mid-table. With the previous years woes well behind them the Hammers suffered terribly because of injury and were never able to get going. With a full squad West Ham proved they were a good side but they showed signs of inconsistency away from home where they struggled to pick up points.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Alan Curbishley has had a quiet summer in the transfer market looking to welcome players back from injury rather than splash out in the transfer market. The Hammers boss however has brought in Valon Behrami from Lazio as well as signing Holmar Orn Eyjolfssonon a free transfer from Denmark.
Reasons why they’ll do well… Compared to their struggles of the 2007, West Ham improved significantly to be solidly mid table all season which will be of some comfort to their supporters. With players coming back from injuries West Ham have the potential to be an excellent side and having beaten Manchester United and troubled Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea they known they have what it takes to beat anyone in the league.
Ways they might struggle… The Hammers were nothing but consistent last year. The fact that they didn’t move from between 9th and 11th shows that the have found they level in mid table at the moment. Despite the fact that they improved significantly did not seem to appease their supporters and rumours suggest that the board are already unhappy with Alan Curbishley over the expensive release of Freddie Ljungberg it is difficult not to think that this could be another season of trouble looming in East London.
It’s a big season for… Craig Bellamy – The Welsh forward missed almost all of last season through injury and in a similar story to recent seasons he was restricted to playing less than half the season. West Ham are sure to be one of those under pressure to perform and his manager will need him to score some goals and stay fit if they are to succeed.
Who might unexpectedly star? James Tomkins – Along with striker Fred Sears, Tomkins was part of the England U-19’s team which played in the European Championships over the summer and having appeared for West Ham in a few games when more senior players were injured he stepped in admirably and may get his chance as part of the first team this year.
Pre season prediction… West Ham will do well to get in the top eight but with the full squad they have the potential. Unfortunately it is more than likely that some of their most important payers will get injured and they will suffer another season of mid table will be more than likely.
Wigan
How the team performed last season… Steve Bruce’s Wigan side looked much stronger last season than they did during their struggles in the previous season. They started the campaign fairly poorly but once Bruce became manager they pushed on and looked for a top half finish which they almost achieved. Wigan were extremely difficult to beat away from home and with some good young players in their team they were a match for anyone at the JJB stadium.
Transfer Activity over the summer… Steve Bruce has been fairly active in the transfer market bringing in two players from his old club Birmingham, Daniel De Ridder and Olivier Kapo. The former Manchester United central defender has also brought in Amr Zaki on loan from Egypt and signed Lee Cattermole from Boro.
Reasons why they’ll do well… The Latics proved their quality last season and thanks to Fulham they achievements were overshadowed, as they were well gone at the bottom of the league when Steve Bruce took over. This season the former central defender has been allowed to build his own team and has added some experience to the quality they have.
Ways they might struggle… Wigan still tended to struggle against some of the ‘bigger’ teams in the Premiership and the picked up points against those around them. The sides towards the bottom of the league have all strengthened in a bid to avoid another season of troubles but who knows if Wigan can gel to be a force this season.
It’s a big season for… Wilson Palacios – The winger was linked with Manchester United last season and having been recommended to Steve Bruce by Arsene Wenger as a player who may be able Birmingham, there is a big weight of expectation on his shoulders as he looks to create goals for Heskey and Sibierski.
Who might unexpectedly star? Amr Zaki – The Egyptian striker comes to the Premiership with an excellent record at international level and alongside Heskey and Sibierski will be required to add goals to the team. Quick and skilful he will no doubt give opponents a problem and will be relatively unknown which may give him an advantage.
Pre season prediction… Wigan could struggle unless they started well and providing they do then a top half finish will no doubt be the target.
