‘PSG’s youngster’s blow Emirates Cup wide open’
PSG 3 – 0 Valencia – Emirates Cup – 29th July
Fielding a much weaker team than on the first day of the competition, PSG opened up the Emirates Cup by demolishing Valencia in a shock result on day two in North London.
Resting several of their big hitters PSG’s second string showed themselves capable of mounting a challenge on the French League. The result left Arsenal and Inter Milan capable of winning the tournament in the final game of the day and despite selecting a very strong side showed the reason why Valencia still need to add reinforcements ahead of the new season.
Strolling to a 2-0 win in the Emirates sun the previous day Valencia began slowly despite putting themselves in a favourable position by beating Inter Milan. But they were caught out by Paul Le Guen’s fired up Frenchmen who with just a week left before the start of their season showed they were ready to improve on last seasons 15th place Ligue 1 finish.
Ready from the off PSG immediately snuffed out the threat of David Villa and doubling up on Gavilan, the previous days star performer, ensured that the front two were working on nothing more than scraps throughout the first period.
The French sides intention was clear from the outset and Valencia keeper Hilderbrand was called into action early on after an effort from Ngog. Five minutes later Gallardo called the goalkeeper into action once again and then shaved the post with a free kick as PSG piled on the pressure.
It seemed inevitable that the French side would take the lead and with their next attack a neat one two between Ngog and Diane led to the Ivory Coast striker to score the opening goal after continuing his run into the penalty area. The Spanish side looked shocked and not able to get a grip on the game they looked more likely to concede again than score.
Gallardo whistled another free kick just past the post and Diane had another shot saved by the German goalkeeper. Valencia attempted to show the skills which has put them in charge on day one but despite their best intentions and a close effort from David Albelda, they fell further behind when Sunny lost the ball in central midfield and a reverse combination of the first goal added a second.
Breaking on the loose ball superb play by Diane and a quick shot led to the ball being bundled over the line by Ngog despite a touch from Hildebrand.
Valencia made changes at the break and Fernando Morientes wasted a good chance just after halftime and had a second effort blocked by a defender moments later. At the other end, Gallardo fired his third free kick of the game just past the post as Valencia seemingly gave up on getting back into the game.
As possession switched backwards and forwards between the two sides Paris St Germain finished off the game with another excellently worked goal. A long ball from Gallardo was played into the bath of Arnaud who drew Hildebrand from his goal before steering the ball into the path of Luyindula who were left with the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net.
