England’s three lions will look to return to roaring ways in the stadiums of their greatest rivals, forty years after their last World Cup win, it is time for Sven’s men to start delivering if they want to be considered more than a ‘more than likely’ for the coming years. As well as England, Europe is strongly represented with Italy, Spain and Holland all posting up impressive qualification stats.
Spain came through a playoff but looked impressive in the run up to the tournament, Italy will be outside bets while a young and vibrant Holland team led by the experience of Cocu and Van Nistelrooy may draw a surprise or two from the tournament, infact Holland will be tested early as they meet Argentina in their final group game.
Aside from the favourites the 2006 World Cup may become the tournament of the underdog. Four teams from Africa have qualified for the first time and Australia who won through via a playoff will be representing Oceania for the first time.
The battle for the African sides may be overcoming the nerves which come with taking a step up into the big time stakes of football.
Togo, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Angola will all the thrilled to be at the tournament but don't be surprised if at least one sneaks through to the second round.
The biggest and best story of the World Cup is undoubtedly Trinidad and Tobago. The smallest country ever to qualify for the tournament made it through to Germany after a dramatic victory over Bahrain. Led by Dwight Yorke the team from the Caribbean island will be hoping to give their supporters something to party about as they bid o make history.
With it all shaping up to be an excellent World Cup, the waiting is almost over…
